Question

My Tax File Number (TFN) is not recorded, does it matter?

Answer

Providing your TFN is voluntary and it is not an offence if you do not provide it.

However if you do not provide your TFN your superannuation contributions and benefits may be affected.

In particular, the Fund cannot accept any non concessional (after tax) contributions eg personal contributions, which if accepted might attract the Federal Government co-contributions.

Also legislation has been passed effective 1 July 2007 that changes the treatment of superannuation contributions.

If you have NOT provided your TFN the legislation requires tax of 31.5% on top of the normal 15% contributions tax to be deducted from all concessional (pre tax) contributions (such as Superannuation Guarantee and salary sacrifice) received on your behalf from 1 July 2007.
